HANDS ON by Ben Alper

Hands On is a handmade artist book that takes as its subject the gestural and poetic potential of hands.  Culled from an instructional volume from the Time-Life series called Caring for Photographs, the images depict single and coupled hands in various states of action.  Removed from their context and stripped of their utilitarian function, these active hands take on a decidedly more cryptic and semiotic character.  Floating in rectangles of grey, they open up the possibility for discrete forms of communication, moving beyond their initial illustrative purposes.  At times awkward, aggressive or vulnerable, these hands become expressive sculptural objects, while simultaneously reminding us that the didactic aim of many photographic images is tenuous and easily disruptible.
